The Punic Wars begin! – CLASH Campaign 2022/23

We are now moving to playtest our upcoming module for running CLASH campaigns. As we work on this we wanted to share with you followers how the campaign advances.
For this initial playtest we have chosen the setting of the first Punic war as this is a great setting that includes plenty of alternative actors and participants. We hope you will enjoy following the events from this campaign and you’ll get an idea what is coming up in the CLASH future.

The year is 265 BC and the island of Sicily sits at the center of the known world. The masters of the sea, Greece and Carthage, have fought for control over it for almost a century.

But when Agathocles, Greek Tyrant of Syracuse, hired an unknown band of Italian mercenaries to fight Carthage he sparked a fire that is now about to rage across the whole of Sicily!

These “Mamartine” mercenaries fought bravely, but when dismissed from service refused to go home and instead tricked and captured the city of Messana, from where they have raided and pillaged across Sicily and the Mediterranean.

The new Tyrant of Syracuse, Hiero, decided to end their threat and after years of campaigning defeated the Mamartines at Longanus. The defeated Mamartines changed sides and asked Carthage to come to their defense, which Carthage gladly did, gaining influence close to Syracuse.

But life under the Carthaginian yoke has not suited the Mamartines, and unable to turn to Greece once more they have instead requested help from a new power in the Mediterranean…the growing city-state of Rome.

And Rome has heeded their call!

Today, October 29th of 265 BC Roman triremes are spotted from the lighthouse at Messana. As legionnaires prepare to disembark, the Carthaginian mercenaries scramble to battle readiness – awaiting orders to fight or loot and retreat…

In a few hours, Roman sandals will land in Sicily and the world will explode into the bloodiest conflict it has ever seen… the PUNIC WARS!

      we will tell more soon..

but basically the system will be a core campaign system on top of which you’ll be able to mount campaign settings.

the system allows for both narrative and sort of competitive campaign in that you have a running tally of performance by the players but also allows you to aim to achieve personal goals for your “house”

it aims to avoid typical pitfalls of imbalance resulting from advancement in the campaign…

the system at its core will not have a map, it is more of a league system since the players are houses within the faction but it will allow the campaign organizer to use a map if they so desired..

so you’ll see us playing this over here and the expansion for campaigns should come out next year…
